Transient structural analysis is also referenced as flexible dynamic analysis. It can be used to find out the dynamic response of a structure under the action of any general time-dependent loads. The flexible dynamic analysis is the most versatile dynamic analysis and it can use it to determine the time-varying displacements, strains, stresses, and forces in a structure as it responds to any transient loads.
A typical application of the transient structural analysis is to investigate the response of a structure under a transient load.
The Transient structural analysis is demanding on computing resource. It should only be used when the inertia or damping effects are considered to be important under the time scale of loadings.
When a transient structural analysis needs to be used, effort should be made to simplify the FE model for the purpose of obtaining a solution in a realistic time frame. The following points should be considered:
- Avoid non-linearity.
- Use point mass to represent some non-structural components to the analysis.
- Use rigid part (multi body dynamics) for the component which flexibility is not critical for the required analysis.
With the progress of computing hardware and high performance computing (HPC), the transient structural analysis has become a more realistic analysis option. TriVista has successfully worked on transient structural analysis for applications in aerospace, defence, oil and gas industries.
