TriVista’s Finite Element Analysis specialist, Mr Xuefeng Wu, wrote an editorial in the Business Edge magazine edition 54 [April/May 2020] Page 41 on “Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has an integral role in modern design.” This publication is produced by the Sussex Chamber of Commerce, and it appeared in a issue focused on Innovation and Design.
Mr Wu provided a background on how FEA as a powerful computational tool has now become an integral part of the modern design process. Just as the wide use of CAD has enabled new product designs to be readily visualised, FEA has complemented this by providing a virtual testing and optimization environment further accelerating the design process at lower cost. He explained how new design performance (single parts or large assemblies) could be evaluated under the real operational loads (forces, pressures, temperatures etc.) before hardware is even made.
He also explained that FEA could also be used to investigate problems occurring on existing products to help identifying the reasons for failures in the field enabling effective design counter measures to be selected. Mr Wu also highlighted how the results from FEA were also now routinely accepted as proof of design integrity and analysis is now required by many industrial standards and companies reducing costs and time relative to physical test validation. TriVista has been providing FEA services to Sussex for over 20 years.
